Why we are different

The Land of Snows is the travel blog of Himalaya Journey, a joint US—Tibetan owned company that specializes in unique, one-of-a-kind, professionally guided adventures in Tibet, Nepal and Bhutan. Most companies offer the same journeys, going to the same places. This is particularly true in Tibet where the majority of travel companies offer the same 3 or 4 travel itineraries that cause you to spend awful long hours in a vehicle each day, while not allowing your body the proper time to adjust to high altitude.

At Himalaya Journey, we know the types of journeys that most people are looking for. Haha, we know because a couple of decades ago we traveled with those other companies and experienced what it was like to spend 8 to 10 hours inside a vehicle (every day for the entire journey!), while barely having a chance to really explore. That is how we are different than everyone else. Rather than get our information just from guidebooks (the ones that we helped to research and write!), we have spent nearly 20 years climbing, trekking and exploring all areas of the Himalayas. Our research has been used by National Geographic, Animal Planet, The Discovery Channel, BBC as well as popular guidebooks such as Lonely Planet, Rough Guides and Bradt. We know you would rather have time to wander around an off-the-beaten-path monastery, meet with local people, learn about history, or get a view of the Himalayas from a place seldom seen by others rather than being cramped inside a van with dozens of other people while being raced from site to site with no time to actually see anything. We want you to have the adventure of a lifetime in the Himalayas. Read some of our reviews here: Himalaya Journey Reviews

We also exist to make a difference in the Himalayas by practicing true conservation, ethical and responsible tourism. All of our guides, drivers, support staff and management are local Tibetans, Nepalese and Bhutanese who are committed to positive change in the Himalayas. The handful of North American management at Himalaya Journey spent decades living in the Himalayas and know the local language and culture. 2019 Professionally Guided Journeys

Jamin “Lobsang” York is the owner and lead guide of Himalaya Journey as well as the main content writer for The Land of Snows. Though from the US, he spent 15 years living on the Tibetan Plateau and has trekked, climbed and explored almost all areas of the Himalayas. He speaks Tibetan and Chinese and is an expert in Tibetan history and culture. Each year he personally guides 3 or 4 unique journeys in Tibet and Nepal. During these journeys, Lobsang gives lectures each day on different aspects of Tibetan history and culture, while going to some of the most amazing regions of the high plateau. Here are the journeys that he will be leading in 2019:

July 2019 Kham Eastern Tibet Adventure: This 2 week journey will be in the eastern Tibetan Plateau region known as Kham. Lobsang spent several years living in different areas of Kham, which is often regarded as the BEST place to experience traditional Tibetan culture. Unlike many areas of Tibet, Kham is GREEN with forests, farmland and grasslands. It has far fewer travel restrictions and is stunningly beautiful. For details on this journey, contact us at: contact page.

September 2019 Tibet Snow Leopard Expedition: This one-of-a-kind expedition will take place in the Mekong River Source Region of the northern Tibetan Plateau. This area is home to a large percentage of the world’s snow leopard population, as well as other wildlife including brown bears, blue sheep, musk deer, wolves, foxes, gazelle, marmots, Pallas’s cats and more. In addition to wildlife viewing, we will go to the Spiritual Source of the Mekong River. The 5th Dalai Lama declared this area to be the source and asked the local Tibetans to protect the river, which they still do to this day. More details at: contact page.

October 2019 Tibet Everest, Kailash and Kathmandu Journey: Lobsang will be leading this 18 day adventure from Lhasa to Kathmandu while doing some epic hiking in many of his secret places in Tibet! Along the way we will go to Everest base camp and complete the 3 day trek around Mt Kailash, Asia’s most sacred peak. This is perfect for those wanting a more active adventure in Tibet. Details at: contact page.

October 2019 Lhasa to Everest and Kathmandu Photography Workshop: This 15 day journey will go from Lhasa to Everest base camp and on to Kathmandu with Canadian professional photographer Ariel Estulin. We will travel at a nice slow pace while photographing many of the best places in Central Tibet. Mr Estulin will be giving teachings on photography throughout this journey, both in a group setting and individually. More details at: contact page.

I just wanted to say that it’s great to still see your blog up and running with so much information and now also a tour agency! I used your website extensively around 2010 – 2012 I believe, maybe even 2007, 2008 already and it was so resourceful, especially your updates on restricted and accessible areas on the Tibetan plateau in Sichuan. Keep it up, also in 2019!
