Tibet Losar Tour

From February 10—20, 2019, we will be hosting a unique, one-of-a-kind cultural and photography journey during the annual Losar Tibetan New Year Holiday. This journey will take place in the Amdo region of the eastern Tibetan Plateau, which is one of the best places to experience authentic traditional culture. The Amdo region is located outside of the Tibet Autonomous Region and is the hometown region of the current Dalai Lama. This journey will begin in the city of Xining in Qinghai province and will take clients to numerous festivals in the Rebkong and Labrang regions. Rebkong and Labrang are in the cultural center of the Amdo area of the eastern Tibetan Plateau and have numerous large and important Buddhist monasteries.

Clients will be going to several key festivals at both monasteries and in village settings. Tibetan New Year, known as Losar, is the most important time of year for Tibetan people. Clients on this journey will experience authentic culture in more remote, off-the-beaten-path areas as well as at the famous monastery of Labrang. This will be a small group journey led by an expert English-speaking Tibetan guide to ensure that you have an amazing time!

Here is the itinerary this journey will be following:

10 February: Arrive to Xining, China by 4pm

11 February: Drive from Xining to Shakyong Monastery to Repkong

12 February: Repkong—Monk dancing at Wutun Monastery

13 February: Repkong—Breakfast Festival and festival at Gomar Monastery

14 February: Repkong—Bongya Monastery Shaman Festival

15 February: Drive from Repkong to Changlung Monastery and to Labrang

16 February: Labrang Monastery and Old Town

17 February: Labrang—Buddhist Tapestry (Thanka) Unveiling

18 February: Labrang Cham Monk Dancing Festival

19 February: Drive from Labrang to Xining

20 February: Journey ends after breakfast

Guiding this journey

Guiding this journey is Tibetan Nyima Tashi. He has been guiding high quality cultural, photography and religious tours in eastern Tibet for over a decade. Nyima Tashi is from a nomadic community in eastern Tibet and is an expert in nomad life and in Tibetan Buddhism. He loves explaining the uniqueness of Tibetan culture to his foreign clients. Nyima Tashi is a graduate of Tso Ngonpo (Qinghai) Normal University. In addition, he studied ecotourism from Columbia University in the US. He is a fluent speaker of English, Chinese and his native Tibetan language. Nyima Tashi is also an accomplished photographer. He has been leading this Tibet Festival Tour for many years and knows the region well.
